Justine Ducie of Sandwich, a member of the University of Rhode Island women's hockey team, has been chosen one of 22 Team USA players to compete at the World University Games, which begin next week in Erzurum, Turkey.

It will be the first women's squad to represent the United States in the World University Games, slated for Jan. 27 to Feb. 6.
Ducie, who graduated Sandwich High in 2007, was selected from a pool of 1,300 American Collegiate Hockey Association players. The association represents men's and women's college club hockey programs in the United States.
"When I was a young hockey player I always wanted to play in the Olympics," said the URI captain. "Obviously, this is not the Olympics, but having the opportunity to play on a team that represents the United States is a dream come true. I feel very lucky to have this opportunity".
Ducie and her teammates will compete against other college athletes representing Canada, Slovakia, Finland, Great Britain and host Turkey in an Olympic-style tournament.
"It is a great honor for our program that Justine is representing not only the University but the United States as well," said Beth McCann, coach of the Rams, who are ranked third nationally by the ACHA. "Justine is a great role model, and she deserves every bit of national recognition as an outstanding student athlete. She's one of the best, and has been a pleasure to coach and mentor for the past 4 years. It's players like her that keep me and our program going."
Ducie, a senior forward majoring in psychology, can't wait for the tourney to begin. She can add this to her list of hockey experiences, which includes a trip last season to France and Switzerland with a select team from the ACHA. "Traveling back overseas to represent the USA this time is so exciting, and I believe it will be the best experience of my hockey career," Ducie said.

Since leaving Barnstable four short years ago, Stephanie Scarpato has been an absolute force for the Colby women's ice hockey team.

The senior forward from Osterville has notched 92 career points (40 goals, 52 assists) in 83 games and is currently tied for sixth in scoring in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with 12 points (six goals, six assists).
Scarpato was recently named NESCAC Co-Player of the Week after earning MVP honors at the St. Michael's Hockey Classic. She had a hand in six of Colby's seven goals in the tourney, including two goals and one assist in a 3-0 win over St. Catherine and one goal and two assists in a 4-3 win over St. Michael's.
"Stephanie is a leader on and off the ice for Colby hockey," said Colby head coach David Venditti. "Her work ethic and desire to excel has made her a top Division III player. Since her freshman year, Scarps has been an important piece of the overall success of this program. She truly enjoys the game and is one of those players you just love to watch compete."

It's been a heady ride for the slick-skating forward who was named Massachusetts Division 2 High School Player of the Year and led the Red Raiders to the state hockey championship in 2007.
"It's been a big step up (from high school) to college where the game is faster and players are bigger and stronger," said Scarpato, who's majoring in psychology and minoring in administrative science at Colby. "Even though there is no checking in the women's game, there's still a lot of contact and you have to be prepared for it."
She's paced Colby (5-10 this winter) in scoring the past three seasons and last year was named to the All-NESCAC second team after leading the Mules in scoring with 12 goals and 16 assists for 28 points and also had two power play goals. She was ninth in the NESCAC scoring, fourth in points (1.12), ninth in goals and eighth in assists.
During her sophomore season, Scarpato led Colby with 13 goals, including three power play goals and 19 assists for 32 points. She was second in the NESCAC in assists, second in points (1.12), third in overall scoring, seventh in goals, seventh in game-winning goals (3), and 10th in power play points (9), while also earning a NESCAC Sportsmanship honor.
Stephanie, who competed in ice hockey, soccer and cross-country at BHS, had a terrific first season helping the Mules to 15 wins. She was third on the team in scoring with nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points. She also had three power play goals.
Scarpato credits her former Barnstable coach
Kim Sullivan and also playing on the
Cape Cod Waves and
Sharks for her rapid development as a standout player. "Kim (Sullivan) was a great coach and I learned a lot from her, especially about accountability and being able to play outside competition like the Waves," said Scarpato, who played ice hockey, soccer, and ran cross country at Barnstable."
